Emergency Equine Injury FAQ

Q: Who do I contact if my horse is in an emergency situation?

A: Contact your large-animal veterinarian first. Also contact your nearest large-animal rescue response unit if your horse is in a situation that requires travel to the vet or needs to be lifted or extracted from difficult terrain.

Q: What constitutes a good equine first-aid checklist?

A: At a minimum, you should have a pre-packaged first-aid kit for each location your horse spends any time at. This includes a kit for the barn or ranch, horse trailer, and saddle for day rides. See our first-aid kits from Equimedic. These contain the basic bandages, gauzes, iodine solutions, antibacterial ointments, etc. In addition, you should also have the following handy:

  • compression leg wraps or coolers
  • extra-large bandages
  • calming powders and supplements
  • stethoscope
  • rectal thermometer
  • wire or bolt cutters
  • flashlight w/ batteries
  • plastic bucket w/ lid to keep everything sealed
